Inspired by my signature talon moon series, this piece features a play on my 'Naja' necklace, and is named after the goddess Hecate. Two small owl talons cast in sterling silver form a crescent moon, cradling a "full moon" rose cut moonstone.
Considered one of the ancient goddesses, (and in some tales), the only Titan allowed to retain her authority after the Olympians seized control, Hecate is a triple faced goddess associated with the moon, witchcraft, the Underworld, specters and the dead. She is also well known as the Goddess of crossroads, symbolically viewed as the liminal space between worlds. Because of these attributes, she has an ability to accept the strange and shadowy nature of people, making her a personal favorite of mine.
Here, Hecate is represented by the diadem shape she is occasionally depicted as wearing in art history. This crescent crown speaks to her role as a Goddess of the Moon in both its crescent shape, as well as its full moon shape, shown here by the rose cut moonstone.
Moonstone is one of my absolute favorite natural stones, and as its name suggests, it is closely tied to the moon, with some cultures believing the stone is solidified moon rays, while others think of it as the embodiments of the moon's tears. Acting as a kind of armor, it is thought to protect its wearer from dark times, as it helps sooth grief, loss and other emotional turbulence. It is also a great tool for meditation and clairvoyance, & has been used in jewelry since ancient times for both its unique beauty and magical qualities. As a romantic stone: moonstone is thought to keep the passion alive between lovers when one gives it to another, especially during a full moon.
Moonstone is a natural stone and therefore has qualities that differ from stone to stone. These are milky rose cut domed moonstones, with natural inclusions and have brilliant flashes of shades of blue, teal and gold. If you are concerned about the stone I will use for your special piece, please contact me after purchase and I will work with you.
A sterling bezel frame holds the moonstone so both the domed front and smooth back are viewed, allowing the stone to "breathe". Entirely made in sterling silver, the piece is paired with my signature bar link chain, and oxidized to my favorite shade of gloomy gray, and polished to highlight the silver underbelly, revealing all the amazing details of the claws.
The pendant is 1.21 inches (30.8mm) wide and (25.9mm) tall with a 15mm moonstone.
Paired with a 16" bar link chain as shown in the images.
