Snake symbology was often used in Victorian imagery, beginning when Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with a snake ring. Here, it further symbolizes the 'unseen realm' that the medium taps into, the spirit world that they ferry messages to and from.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePart of my Lily Dale series, (the largest community of spiritualist mediums, which I visited in the summer of 2010) this piece marks my interest in Victorian Spiritualism, and how it has thrived in the shadows of modern society. Seances were made popular in the mid 1800's and consisted of a group of people who encircled a table, often holding hands, in the candle lit darkness to communicate with the 'other side' or the spirit world. Ring.","description":"\u003cmeta charset=\"UTF-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBack in September of 2018, Brazil’s oldest natural history museum, caught fire. This fire ripped through most of the buildings, and in photos against a night sky, large swathes of bright flame bloom high above the old buildings. Inside, entire collections of memory were being swallowed up in this blaze, butterflies and other insect collections, shells, taxidermied birds, and perhaps the most devastating - recordings of indigenous languages being spoken were completely lost within hours. Scraps of paper with hand written notes and illustrations rained down over a mile away, blown by the roaring winds generated by the fire. I remember hearing about this happening in real time while driving through the darkness of a lonely midwestern road, the radio on, hearing a woman speaking with devastation in her voice about the loss to our collective memory keeping. I remember thinking : my heart is this pyre too, filled with these butterflies. I could feel her grief from across the sea. I could feel the heat of that fire through her voice. Perhaps our hearts are all connected in this way - through the grief that 'fire' can bring down upon us all - the destructive nature that reduces us all to ashes - the Tower Season it feels were all in privately in the secret chambers of our hearts, and also so vividly and viscerally together, collectively as we reshuffle and try to figure out new ways of being with one another. Are our hearts all a bit the same now that they have been touched by fire ? Edge with flame marks ?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFire has the power to cleanse and renew as well as to destroy. We use it to keep ourselves warm and to light our way in the darkness. It brings comfort and mimics the solar energy of the sun, the greatest star, forever on fire above us. We carry a bit of this inside ourselves, a heart that is also, a house, a book, a chamber with many rooms, a memory storehouse, a grief museum …..when its set on fire, all of these functions are both made more intense, more sacred and can also all be destroyed - with the potential to be made new again. I’ve been thinking a lot lately of the Phoenix - towards the end of its life, it makes a nest of sacred herbs and spices and immolates itself within this space. From these ashes of both self and nest\/home, a new Phoenix rises. I like to think about this sacred fire, this choice, this renewal. What it means to carry a heavy heart, grief, turbulent emotions, and to somehow find the will to make a choice to be ‘new’ - to come out of the ashes of the fallen Tower - a broken heart - a season of grief - a hard time - and feel new feathers forming under your skin, feel the fire in your heart’s blood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ancient Egyptians believed the heart to be the seat of everything : knowledge, memory, and emotion. They so firmly believed in the power of the heart they left it in the body during the mummification process, an embedded star, to be weighed and tested for passage into the afterlife. Scraps of paper with hand written notes and illustrations rained down over a mile away, blown by the roaring winds generated by the fire. I remember hearing about this happening in real time while driving through the darkness of a lonely midwestern road, the radio on, hearing a woman speaking with devastation in her voice about the loss to our collective memory keeping. I remember thinking : my heart is this pyre too, filled with these butterflies. I could feel her grief from across the sea. I could feel the heat of that fire through her voice. Perhaps our hearts are all connected in this way - through the grief that 'fire' can bring down upon us all - the destructive nature that reduces us all to ashes - the Tower Season it feels were all in privately in the secret chambers of our hearts, and also so vividly and viscerally together, collectively as we reshuffle and try to figure out new ways of being with one another. Are our hearts all a bit the same now that they have been touched by fire ? We carry a bit of this inside ourselves, a heart that is also, a house, a book, a chamber with many rooms, a memory storehouse, a grief museum …..when its set on fire, all of these functions are both made more intense, more sacred and can also all be destroyed - with the potential to be made new again. When my father died and I was allowed into his home to pour over and collect some of his things, I saw the house high on a shelf on a wall, still unfinished, lonely. I think of it this way, disintegrating, lost to time, the way a body falls loose of itself and becomes bones. A house can do this too, I believe. Become lost to time. Its rooms settling and sinking, wallpaper peeling, plaster dust thick in the air. My father’s house, my first house, no longer exists. Someone tore it down. I imagine the dollhouse torn down too, both gone, though forever in the miniature rooms of my mind. Grief does that, no matter how long its been, it creates rooms and whole houses inside you, putting up walls and doors where there were none before. Maybe you know what I mean. Maybe we share the same fruit, eat the same seeds. Much like other members of the solanaceae family, it is highly toxic in high doses. This includes all parts of it, from its gorgeous trumpet like flowers, to its toothy leaves, its roots and its infamous inky black seeds which are incased in spiky seed pods. In smaller doses, it has been used in the past as healing salves for inflammation and pain while also being utilized in folk magic to induce visionary and hallucinogenic states. Among tribes with shamanic practices, Datura was considered sacred and can be found in cave paintings and on pre-historic ceramics, suggesting its use during these times.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the attributes of this plant that drew me to it aside from its beauty and folklore, is its ability to grow alongside the edges of places, even here in the city. Its seeds disperse when its pods dry and crack open and I’ve witnessed it grow from cracks in the sidewalk, through holes in chain link fences, abundantly in between buildings and in other abandoned empty spaces in the city where such beauty seems out of place. It is seemingly weed like in nature and yet in other places, it is planted with care as an ornamental despite its poisonous properties.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’ve been amazed at the thick roots of one bush that grew wild in an abandoned space between two buildings before it was cut down, its seeds freckling the earth as if to say, you haven’t truly destroyed me. Its hardiness in the face of a gritty landscape and Phoenix like regenerative qualities endears me to it as much as its beauty and magical properties.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoon colored, Datura unfurl and open at night and is therefore pollinated by moths, Sphinx moths in particular who hover around its blooms like hummingbirds, sipping from them with their long tongues. I witnessed this for the first time last summer, while visiting one plant with a friend from out of town near where I live in a fairly industrial part of the city. We watched the moth drink from flower to flower in wonder in the hot summer night air until it moved on. It felt both strange and wonderful to witness and I don’t know why it surprised me to see; if there are flowers thriving in the city, surely there could be Sphinx moths ?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis fortuitous moment inspired the jewel on offer here : a hybrid creature, a moth that is a Datura, a Datura that is a moth. Its sinuous body is meant to evoke the rippling petals of the Datura flower in bloom while also retaining the gesture and features of a moth, albeit one born from dreams rather than natural history.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoths have long been a creature I’ve used in the library of my personal symbology within BloodMilk. As a symbol of transformation: beginning their lives as caterpillars, they gorge themselves before outgrowing their exoskeletons. They will sometimes shed their skins ( like a snake ! ) up to five times with their final time forming its chrysalis or pupa. This is the fascinating \/ magical part for me: their caterpillar bodies will begin to disintegrate into a kind of jelly yet its believed they retain some of their memories as their new body moth body forms in the velvety dark protection of its cocoon. Once its ready to emerge, it begins to break free and its struggle to release itself also helps pump fluid and energy into its wings. Moth signifies, a period of patience, surrender and profound transformation or awakening through introspection. Much like other members of the solanaceae family, it is highly toxic in high doses. This includes all parts of it, from its gorgeous trumpet like flowers, to its toothy leaves, its roots and its infamous inky black seeds which are incased in spiky seed pods. In smaller doses, it has been used in the past as healing salves for inflammation and pain while also being utilized in folk magic to induce visionary and hallucinogenic states. Among tribes with shamanic practices, Datura was considered sacred and can be found in cave paintings and on pre-historic ceramics, suggesting its use during these times.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the attributes of this plant that drew me to it aside from its beauty and folklore, is its ability to grow alongside the edges of places, even here in the city. Its seeds disperse when its pods dry and crack open and I’ve witnessed it grow from cracks in the sidewalk, through holes in chain link fences, abundantly in between buildings and in other abandoned empty spaces in the city where such beauty seems out of place. It is seemingly weed like in nature and yet in other places, it is planted with care as an ornamental despite its poisonous properties.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’ve been amazed at the thick roots of one bush that grew wild in an abandoned space between two buildings before it was cut down, its seeds freckling the earth as if to say, you haven’t truly destroyed me. Its hardiness in the face of a gritty landscape and Phoenix like regenerative qualities endears me to it as much as its beauty and magical properties.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoon colored, Datura unfurl and open at night and is therefore pollinated by moths, Sphinx moths in particular who hover around its blooms like hummingbirds, sipping from them with their long tongues. I witnessed this for the first time last summer, while visiting one plant with a friend from out of town near where I live in a fairly industrial part of the city. We watched the moth drink from flower to flower in wonder in the hot summer night air until it moved on. It felt both strange and wonderful to witness and I don’t know why it surprised me to see; if there are flowers thriving in the city, surely there could be Sphinx moths ?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis fortuitous moment inspired the jewel on offer here : a hybrid creature, a moth that is a Datura, a Datura that is a moth. Its sinuous body is meant to evoke the rippling petals of the Datura flower in bloom while also retaining the gesture and features of a moth, albeit one born from dreams rather than natural history.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoths have long been a creature I’ve used in the library of my personal symbology within BloodMilk. As a symbol of transformation: beginning their lives as caterpillars, they gorge themselves before outgrowing their exoskeletons. They will sometimes shed their skins ( like a snake ! ) up to five times with their final time forming its chrysalis or pupa. This is the fascinating \/ magical part for me: their caterpillar bodies will begin to disintegrate into a kind of jelly yet its believed they retain some of their memories as their new body moth body forms in the velvety dark protection of its cocoon. Once its ready to emerge, it begins to break free and its struggle to release itself also helps pump fluid and energy into its wings. Moth signifies, a period of patience, surrender and profound transformation or awakening through introspection. Brought to England in the 1800’s by plant hunters who were fascinated by its unique shape and bright color, the flowers became stars of the Victorian garden boom. There it became part of the language of flowers and was exchanged between those seeking to declare romantic intention, as well as becoming a symbol of enduring affection and undying love due to its shape and seasonal return.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite these more romantic associations, it was also associated with heartbreak and unrequited love, both due to the “bleeding” aspect of the flower and as well as folklore from Japan. This folklore tells a tale about a spurned prince who’s death after being rejected from a beautiful maiden caused the plant to grow in the spot where his blood had spilled.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom Asia it was introduced to the US, which already had native variants of its own, including the pale white\/pink Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis), known to the indigenous people of Northern America. This association makes me think of the symbolism of the Sacred Heart, the worship of the disembodied heart of a deity, wounded \u0026amp; bleeding, and yet radiant and strange.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInterestingly, despite and perhaps because of their beauty, all variants of Bleeding Heart flowers are poisonous to animals and humans alike, however are important for early pollinators such as bees who are able to crawl inside the opening of the heart.
