For one, it is the sigil of St. Joan of Arc, infamous for her visions of god, and her bloody crusades as an armored warrior. Perhaps they are picked open in a flash by something that brushes against the memory of their wounding. Or perhaps we work hard at the healing of them. Either way, once there is a wound, we are changed, forever. We learn we grow, we modify our behavior around this wound - similar to the way an oyster will grow layers around an irritant within its shell and make a pearl. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese kinds of deep wounds also let things in - they act like  portals and psychic passages ways - they weep, they bleeds, they pour forth, but they also let things in. When we are in a liminal state of grief, or change, we can feel disassociated from our bodies - it's kind of a strange dreamlike state, an electric time when we are a bit more malleable than we usually are. We go out into the world a bit like a sacrifice on the pyre, burning with an intensity that wasn't there before. We might feel deeper or differently than we ever did before because of this wounding, or perhaps, feel less than we ever have. The deepest wounds forces one to travel down into the underworld of oneself. It's my hope that the silver flame of this heart will act as a torch to help guide your way down those layers - a tactile touchstone that you can run your fingers over as you feel your way through those stages \/ journeys. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Ancient Egyptians believed the heart to be the seat of everything : knowledge, memory, and emotion. Our unconscious can present itself as our Shadow – aspects of ourselves that we have tried to suppress, often since childhood, due to societal norms. We acclimate, sometimes without even realizing it, to the pressures of the world around us and push down these inky parts of ourselves –often hiding them from our conscious selves – making the Shadow feel akin to an Underworld that we travel to in dreams or in traumatic moments, often surprising ourselves. As taught in Jungian theory, if we are able to meet our Shadow, to be more aware of it, we have reached another step on the path towards being whole, to a richer expansion of ourselves. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince I first released a Labyrinth design I I feel I’ve only been walking deeper into this serpentine path, at times closing in on the Minotaur while also finding myself lost, shouldering against walls that dead end. When I imagine myself walking the path it’s often at night, I’m holding tightly onto my jeweled thread, knowing my beloved has the other end. I know it’s up to me to find the center, to make peace with the darkest parts of myself. I know it’s up to me to find my way out. Sometimes this feels like the most daunting task and I feel alone. Other times I can hear friends and beloveds shouting over the walls, calling me home. I had always wanted to create mourning jewelry and while I always considered ( \u0026amp; still do ) everything I made to be just that, I still wanted to create pieces that used symbolism from that time period. It’s taken me 16 years, but these new jewels are born from that time of intense mourning, a grief that still swims within me like a piece of sea glass: worn smooth with time but still sharp enough to wound when the waves crash just right. Each one of these three new designs were created in collaboration with my husband Aaron Horkey and made in my studio by my team here in Philadelphia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eCharon, the ferryman that carried the shades of the dead across the river Acheron ( in other tellings, the river Styx ) in the Underworld, required payment for the journey. Thusly, family members of the deceased would bury their dead with a coin to ensure Charon had his due. Placing a coin in the mouth of the dead was also thought to have acted as a seal for the soul, to protect it from returning. It was also believed to have acted as sustenance for the journey. Here, the bee coin, of which there is evidence of being used as one of Charon’s Obols, was thought to have provided a ‘sweet afterlife’ or to have ‘sweetened’ the journey through the Underworld. The bee coin found in grave goods was actually a thinner version of a coin used for currency, perhaps that of the coins from the city of Ephesus in tribute to the Goddess Artemis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBees were significant to the Greeks, they were a symbol of health, fertility, wisdom, power. They were also associated with healing, as their honey was used to treat wounds. Bees also created hives in caves, which associated them with liminal spaces, thought to be close to the entrances to the Underworld, linking them with chthonic deities. I decided to update the design, here its traditional inky Onyx spheres are married to large Onyx star cuts and are spaced with tiny sterling silver beads to represent the silk knots I first used when I began this portion of the line. Here, I was thinking of The Weeping Woman haunting the edges of The Tower, gathering ash and creating mourning ink for paintings. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe original strand this was created in sisterhood to, was made in homage to Frida Kahlo. In the most recent film made of her life, there is a scene where Frida is mourning the betrayal of her husband in a bar. An older woman, crone like and ghostly, begins singing  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eLa Llorona\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e, serenading her in a bar. This woman is actually Chavela Vargas, who knew Frida in life. I can’t imagine what that must have felt like for her, the synchronicity ( although planned) to serenade such a song to Salma Hayek who looked like her Frida in her youth, a friend who had been gone for decades. The strand was a reaction to this moment, to Frida’s paintings, to her pain, to the grief of those who are gone from us forever, to the ghosts of women who haunt the edges. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"m_-8772918547761582622gmail-p1\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eNothing about ghostly creatures of lore or Frida denotes subtlety, so this strand was also designed to stand out, to haunt the body, to assist in comfort. When I wear it, it becomes an extension of my body, it is a tactile experience; grounding and comforting. This includes all parts of it, from its gorgeous trumpet like flowers, to its toothy leaves, its roots and its infamous inky black seeds which are incased in spiky seed pods. In smaller doses, it has been used in the past as healing salves for inflammation and pain while also being utilized in folk magic to induce visionary and hallucinogenic states. Inside, entire collections of memory were being swallowed up in this blaze, butterflies and other insect collections, shells, taxidermied birds, and perhaps the most devastating - recordings of indigenous languages being spoken were completely lost within hours. Scraps of paper with hand written notes and illustrations rained down over a mile away, blown by the roaring winds generated by the fire. I remember hearing about this happening in real time while driving through the darkness of a lonely midwestern road, the radio on, hearing a woman speaking with devastation in her voice about the loss to our collective memory keeping. I remember thinking : my heart is this pyre too, filled with these butterflies. I could feel her grief from across the sea. I could feel the heat of that fire through her voice. Perhaps our hearts are all connected in this way - through the grief that 'fire' can bring down upon us all - the destructive nature that reduces us all to ashes - the Tower Season it feels were all in privately in the secret chambers of our hearts, and also so vividly and viscerally together, collectively as we reshuffle and try to figure out new ways of being with one another. Are our hearts all a bit the same now that they have been touched by fire ? I’ve been thinking a lot lately of the Phoenix - towards the end of its life, it makes a nest of sacred herbs and spices and immolates itself within this space. From these ashes of both self and nest\/home, a new Phoenix rises. I like to think about this sacred fire, this choice, this renewal. A wholly unexpected grief that cleaved my life into a before and after. Previous to this time, I hadn’t truly considered the afterlife, I didn’t grow up with a familial belief or had a religious culture to lean into. This led me to a period of seeking, and I began to become obsessed with Victorian era practices of mourning as well as Spiritualism in tandem to making the first pieces of BloodMilk. I had always wanted to create mourning jewelry and while I always considered ( \u0026amp; still do ) everything I made to be just that, I still wanted to create pieces that used symbolism from that time period. It’s taken me 16 years, but these new jewels are born from that time of intense mourning, a grief that still swims within me like a piece of sea glass: worn smooth with time but still sharp enough to wound when the waves crash just right. Each one of these three new designs were created in collaboration with my husband Aaron Horkey and made in my studio by my team here in Philadelphia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eCharon, the ferryman that carried the shades of the dead across the river Acheron ( in other tellings, the river Styx ) in the Underworld, required payment for the journey. Thusly, family members of the deceased would bury their dead with a coin to ensure Charon had his due. Placing a coin in the mouth of the dead was also thought to have acted as a seal for the soul, to protect it from returning. It was also believed to have acted as sustenance for the journey. Here, the bee coin, of which there is evidence of being used as one of Charon’s Obols, was thought to have provided a ‘sweet afterlife’ or to have ‘sweetened’ the journey through the Underworld. The bee coin found in grave goods was actually a thinner version of a coin used for currency, perhaps that of the coins from the city of Ephesus in tribute to the Goddess Artemis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBees were significant to the Greeks, they were a symbol of health, fertility, wisdom, power. They were also associated with healing, as their honey was used to treat wounds. Bees also created hives in caves, which associated them with liminal spaces, thought to be close to the entrances to the Underworld, linking them with chthonic deities. Often times I imagine it living in the cauldron of my heart, or in that seemingly void space between my heart and stomach, maybe you can imagine it - a space that feels as if a black hole exists there, a night sea, a sea of grief where one grief lives and then another is poured into it, and then another, another ...until the grief becomes a kind of elixir I'm cooking over a fire, an elixir that cures no one, least of all me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eOther days I feel my grief is so large and so shadowy that its made of my body a haunted house; speculative fiction writer Samantha Hunt writers in her NYT interview :\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\" I started to think about the way we get haunted as a process of calcification, 'haunted' is when something accompanies you, when we are not fully aware of a presence. It's something that you carry around inside of you.\" \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI think on this at night, when mostly everything is quiet, and my thought patterns shift from my day time rhythm to more 'cocoon' thoughts which I equate to the process of 'calcification' that Hunt describes. My cocoon space becomes liquid with my grief, it becomes filled with the ghosts of my griefs which feel like ghosts, like presences I carry around within me. These griefs are both big and small. The large griefs are the loss of people, the deaths I dance with, that I try to understand and still, despite it being years later, accept. This dance sometimes becomes a grappling in the dark, I can feel myself shouldering against walls of understanding and violently losing. Much like other members of the solanaceae family, it is highly toxic in high doses. This includes all parts of it, from its gorgeous trumpet like flowers, to its toothy leaves, its roots and its infamous inky black seeds which are incased in spiky seed pods. In smaller doses, it has been used in the past as healing salves for inflammation and pain while also being utilized in folk magic to induce visionary and hallucinogenic states. Among tribes with shamanic practices, Datura was considered sacred and can be found in cave paintings and on pre-historic ceramics, suggesting its use during these times.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the attributes of this plant that drew me to it aside from its beauty and folklore, is its ability to grow alongside the edges of places, even here in the city. Its seeds disperse when its pods dry and crack open and I’ve witnessed it grow from cracks in the sidewalk, through holes in chain link fences, abundantly in between buildings and in other abandoned empty spaces in the city where such beauty seems out of place. It is seemingly weed like in nature and yet in other places, it is planted with care as an ornamental despite its poisonous properties.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’ve been amazed at the thick roots of one bush that grew wild in an abandoned space between two buildings before it was cut down, its seeds freckling the earth as if to say, you haven’t truly destroyed me. We watched the moth drink from flower to flower in wonder in the hot summer night air until it moved on. It felt both strange and wonderful to witness and I don’t know why it surprised me to see; if there are flowers thriving in the city, surely there could be Sphinx moths ?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis fortuitous moment inspired the jewel on offer here : a hybrid creature, a moth that is a Datura, a Datura that is a moth. They will sometimes shed their skins ( like a snake ! ) up to five times with their final time forming its chrysalis or pupa. This is the fascinating \/ magical part for me: their caterpillar bodies will begin to disintegrate into a kind of jelly yet its believed they retain some of their memories as their new body moth body forms in the velvety dark protection of its cocoon. Once its ready to emerge, it begins to break free and its struggle to release itself also helps pump fluid and energy into its wings. Moth signifies, a period of patience, surrender and profound transformation or awakening through introspection. The large griefs are the loss of people, the deaths I dance with, that I try to understand and still, despite it being years later, accept. This dance sometimes becomes a grappling in the dark, I can feel myself shouldering against walls of understanding and violently losing. Maybe you understand how this kind of grief can surface like a mammoth tusk in an ice thaw. We mourn the loss of our identity ( so many of us perhaps unexpectedly faced this these past two years with unplanned moves, job changes etc ), the feeling of not being enough, or of being 'too much'. We mourn the loss of lovers, and the loss of friends who we once thought of as family. The family who we thought we were aligned with in all matters of the heart. The grief of illness, the grief of a missed opportunity. The grief of being displaced, the grief of feeling helpless in the face of so much timeline horror ..... this griefs are also poured into the sea of my heart, the sea of the collective heart. The Shadow Self is a concept via Carl Jung and represents the repressed parts of our psyche, the traits that are societally\/culturally deemed ‘bad’ or ‘unacceptable’ (anger, sadness, grief, selfishness, pettiness, etc.) The shadow is composed of all of the disowned and unwanted parts of yourself that you press down into the unconscious. Shadow work – the process of identifying (rather than projecting onto others) these traits and feelings is messy, brutal, lifelong work. There are romantic aspects to it (for me, the dream of being whole), but it also has a raw quality, akin to those traumatic first days of new grief.
