Here, I've joined two potent images, the spine and the snake, to lay across the finger in a way that mimics hand armor.
In Egyptian mythology, the spine as a symbol was associated with Osiris, & also called the djed column. As a talismanic object, its strength lied in stability and regeneration, suggesting a link between the physical aspects of our body and our psyche. The djed column was also used in the transformational process of the flesh to spirit, mortality to eternity.
Joining this potent symbol of strength to the symbol of the remains of a snake pushes the borders of the human world and the spirit world. Snakes, known as liminal creatures (that invoke either intense fear or intense reverence from people) form some of the oldest symbols in our culture, such as the Ouroboros. Their lidless eyes seem to see beyond the veil, seeing what the consciousness can not.
The vertebrae is a life cast, meaning the ring has some interesting texture, and is joined with a split V ring band, measuring 2 inches long. Cast immortal in sterling silver, and oxidized to achieve my obsessive shade of gloomy gray/black.
