Planchette Luna Moth Brooch

Part of the 'Darkling, I Listen' collection, these planchette moths are the start of a new direction for me, as up until now, nearly all of the 'natural history' jewels have been molded from real specimens. Since moths are nearly impossible to mold due to their delicacy, this one is entirely imaginary. Its body is based on the body of luna moths and its wings hold the 'markings' of planchettes, a symbol that has long been the heart of my line and an enduring personal symbol.

I was inspired by several things, chiefly being the writings of Carl Jung on the process of 'Inner Alchemy'. Each phase of the alchemical process from antiquity was re-assigned new meanings: i.e. the quest for the philosopher's stone is truly a quest to become whole. In the 'Nigredo' process, everything is blackened, putrefied, 'killed' in a sense, to allow for new growth. It is during this phase in 'inner alchemy' that we are confronted with the knowledge our darker aspects, a phase in which we must accept our shadow selves. In relation to the moth, I was thinking of the long metamorphosis these creatures undergo, and then their strenuous struggle to escape their cocoons once ready. I likened this process to the Nigredo phase, in which moths liquify and rebuild themselves anew within their dark little worlds. When they emerge, they are whole. When we accept and acknowledge our more shadowy aspects, the parts of ourselves we have been conditioned to suppress, the parts of ourselves we hide from others as well as oursevles, we are on the path to wholeness. We become more accepting of our flaws. Having struggled with my shadow self for many years, this talisman represents not only that struggle, but our ability to become whole.

Secondly, this piece is inspired by my struggles with grief and my interest in the afterlife. Are we capable of continuing a relationship with our dead? For most, periods of grief are often lonely and isolated times. During my own intense period of grief, the planchette became a person symbol to me for the love that endures after death, as it has been long used as a tool for automatic writing and spirit communication. Here, the moth has become a winged messenger, perhaps ferrying messages to and from worlds within its own tragically short life span.

This listing is for one large planchette luna moth brooch, cast in sterling silver hand oxidized and highlighted in my beloved gloomy gray.
