Nesting in the Underworld. Labradorite & Sterling Silver.

Nesting in the Underworld. Labradorite & Sterling Silver.

Originally inspired by the liminal space of the underworld, this classic ring setting from my collection is given a new life, coupled with the interesting beauty of Labradorite.

A vintage setting serves as the foundation of this collaged ring: a nest like tangle of twisting vines / limbs/ veins cradle a "dark" moon Labradorite. Flanking either side of the ring as silent guardians of this precious moon ("egg") are two hummingbird skulls, carefully sculpted into the ring so their long, nectar culling beaks curve with the ring shaft.

Being relegated to the Western hemisphere only, the hummingbird turns up in native and Aztec lore and myth. The Aztecs wore hummingbird fetishes as emblems of strength, and for the image of their sharp beaks, symbolic of bloodletting and piercing. The image was carved onto the shoulders of priests, and hummingbirds were also considered to be reincarnated warriors. This idea is often found in other cultures and thus the hummingbird is often associated with containing the spirits of those who have crossed over.

Growing up I had a lot of Labradorite jewelry, given to me for their great helping properties, in particular for their ability to relieve anxiety & melancholy. It is also said to be used to dispel negativity & fear, acting as a kind of psychic armor to more troubling & turbulent emotions. Akin to Moonstone as a member of the Feldspar family, Labradorite is often associated with the more "darker" aspects of the Goddess, in her Crone form, full of the experience & wisdom of life and death, associated with the darker, waning through to the new moon phases.

Labradorite is also a stone of transformation, and is said to help those with intuitive gifts to awaken and realize their full potential as well as helping enhance creative talents. It also ranks as one of the most protective stones, shielding its wearer from negativity. Much like its sister Moonstone, Labradorite has been used and worn in many cultures and tribes for both its incredible natural beauty, and for its potent magical properties.

Please note that Labradorite is a natural stone so clarity and color will vary from stone to stone. Labradorite has natural lines and inclusions and varies greatly in shades of green; from a teal green to a more swampy green as well as including a spectrum of shades of blue. If you have any concerns over the stone that will be randomly chosen for your ring, please contact me after purchase and I will gladly help you.

The ring stands 20mm off of the finger & is 34mm at its widest.
The round, smooth labradorite cabochon is 20mm.

This version is cast entirely in sterling silver here in Philadelphia at a local, independent casting company and is hand oxidized and polished to achieve my rich shade of gloomy gray. If you are interested in a high polish finish or a rose gold plated finish, please contact me for pricing.
