Nocturne II.

The night-time has come rinsing over us like a mourning veil here in the region of the world where I live as our yearly time change and place on the planet has brought on shorter days and less light. For some, the cooler weather and darker days/nights precipitates periods of more creatively fertile experiences as well as more comfort in their bodies in general. For others, these darker periods can bring about deeper journeys into melancholia and introspection that can lead to overall feelings of ‘un-wellness’ that may only heal { however slightly } when the light returns. There are also those of us who live between these spaces of being during this time of year, the betwixt place, the liminal place. This is for you too.

Getting through the darker times is a process; utilizing the time creatively or energetically is a process.

This strand was made for this duality of experience as it’s length allowed for more freedom of design while I was crafting it, as well as for a ‘longer’ aesthetic look, representing the longer nights here.

This strand features an abundance of mourning beads sourced from a disintegrating mourning jacket/cape. Each strand from this collection features beads from the same garment, connecting each potential new owner in a kind of web to each other, but also, to the garment that has survived at least a 100 years + before it reached my personal collection. Taking apart the delicate threads that held the beads was a beautiful process while I created the strand seen in the photos ~ a feeling of a gentle haunting came over me and in a way, each strand is haunted by the past and the sentiment of providing comfort during times of grief.

Grief is a complex word and can mean different things to different people. It’s a liminal word for these ‘Tower times’ and more people are experiencing it and sharing in it than when I first started this work back in 2008. Grief can mean the mourning of a loss of a loved one; we are experiencing a great time of death on this timeline ~ but it can also mean grieving the loss of a friendship, a lover, a career that you feel is no longer the right fit, the loss of identity as you change your psychic zip code and move to a new place to start again ….the idea of grief is more complex that what death can complicate inside our bodies. As a culture here in the part of the world I live, I believe we collectively lack proper tools or rituals to heal or transmute these feelings and experiences …. what if jewelry could do this ? What if it could act as something more, a talismanic vessel that could become a companion - something worn closer and longer to the body than a lover or child can be held ? Something magic ? Something just yours ? Something that may connect you to others in unexpected but joyful ways in which you can feel seen and perhaps understood ? These are my hopes - gathered bead by bead …. dreams dreamt in the velvet darkness of the night and strung on a serpentine like strand …..

Nocturne has had a few meanings over time; mostly based in art practices in the 18th and 19th centuries such as compositions for the piano ( most notably Debussy ) for evening entertainment or oil paintings evocative and of the night, that one can now find in museums, but were meant to be hung and admired in private homes after their ‘tours’. It is also rooted in the French - meaning ‘of the night’.

With these two ‘sister’ strands ( see Nocturne I ) and this small collection, my inspiration was to create my own ’night scenes’ or strands evocative of the night, that can be worn rather than listened to or admired on the wall, but are still reminiscent of that era of art making. Wearing the Night and being ‘of the night’ is always an abstract concept I’m exploring in my work; a quiet thread in the larger themes at play in each piece.

This extra long strand is composed of our beloved star cut Onyx, faceted and smooth Onyx beads, and an abundance of mourning beads sourced from a Victorian era mourning jacket. This serpentine length adds a versatility to the strand; its relatively light weight { in comparison to some of our other designs } as well as its dual design pattern gives the look of wearing two separate strands when worn doubled up. The varying size and texture of the beads allows for a tactile experience for those who use these strands in ritual, mourning, meditation or other grounding practices that can aid the wearer return to their body in moments of anxiety or other discomforting emotions.

*Pay extra care and be mindful if you intend to wear this strand at its full length without doubling it up.*

Onyx is best known for being a natural stone that act as a kind of 'psychic armor' against the negativity of others. It is also used to sooth grief and heartbreak. They are wonderful grounding stones and stones of self mastery, enabling its wearers to have mental and spiritual focus.

Spinel is a potent stone for healing and protection: working to help clear intense emotions such as anger and rage, it imbues its wearer with a sense of calm. It is also used to heal the physical body and has powerful metaphysical qualities, helping its wearer to feel strong, assisting with perseverance, especially when dealing with issues from the past that have become difficult to overcome. Much like Onyx, it also helps repel negativity from others.

This strand measures 54 inches long including clasp.

Miguel wears the strand doubled up.

Jess wears the strand at its full length.

At its closure our medium sized, double sided eye talisman adds an additional layer of psychic protection. This eye can be positioned at the back of the neck or on the front of the body.
