The’ Self-Portrait’ series was born after I had the opportunity to view the exhibition of Frida Kahlo’s personal belongings and clothing at the Brooklyn museum in 2019. Among the treasures on view were her beaded necklaces, included one made of chunky aqua colored stones, that were believed to be Mayan grave goods as Diego often purchased artifacts from excavation sites. She strung her own strands together and this was evident - as well as a swirl of paint, similar in color, on one of the beads; she was most likely color matching for one of her self-portraits. I’d like to try to express how seeing these things in person made me feel; as if she was present, her spirit filling up the room, at turns exuberant and melancholy- but I can’t. My words, what I often fall back on to truly express myself, don’t feel quite enough. Instead, I decided to make my own strands, similar in length and size, to hers- to echo through time and to allow for a kind of web to be formed. Frida was always wearing jewelry and was one of the inspirations for my own love of jewelry before I began making my own. Psychic armor forever.

This strand is truly limited and features an interesting mix of beads: luminous gray moonstones that skew slightly warmer than our more cooler ones but not quite ‘French gray and filled with what I like to call ‘crystal glitter’, black onyx spheres, sparkling spinel, black glass and tiny cocoon shaped pearls. I was thinking about how the idea of walking the path of the Labyrinth can be meditative or healing for some, a time spent in a cocoon, restorative- and this is a talisman for that. Even though much of this collection is laden with the need for a balm for grief, I was also thinking of the need to tuck ones self away in the Labyrinth- the need to disappear. We can remain tethered by way of our thread, our jeweled thread that hopefully is held tight by our loved one, represented her by the tube shaped glass beads, but we also need time alone. Maybe this time alone is to face ourselves at the center, to ‘face our demons’ - to come against all we may have been avoiding. Maybe walking the path means walking with yourself in a way you haven’t before. Perhaps the rupture of grief or other big life change has transformed you and you need this time to yourself. Who will you become when you leave your shell, when you leave your cocoon, when you cross the threshold on your way out of the Labyrinth? I hope you’ll carry this strand with you, I hope you’ll twist these beads in between your fingers for years to come in comfort and know you are not alone because you always have yourself.

Designed to be worn closer to the neck, this strand measures approximately 27 inches long from end to end, including clasp.

At its closure is our larger, double sided, Cretan labyrinth clasp in sterling silver, oxidized to our favorite gloomy grey and and finished to highlight the shining silver beneath.

As a special, bold statement piece, it also layers beautifully with other BloodMilk necklaces.
