Swan Song. Moonstone & Sterling Silver.

Swan Song. Moonstone & Sterling Silver.

The first incarnation of this ring came shortly after the 2010 release of the movie 'Black Swan.' While this new version carries the name that partly inspired the ring, like many other things in life, its meaning as a visual metaphor, and as a talisman has evolved as it is now coupled with the stunning beauty and power of the moonstone.

An emotive ring featuring two unique components, a vintage feather ring has been married to a stunning round cut moonstone. Moonstone is one of my absolute favorite natural stones, at its name suggests, it is closely tied to the moon, with some cultures believing the stone is solidified moon rays, while others think of them as embodiments of the moon's tears. Acting as a kind of armor, it is thought to protect its wearer from not only dark nights, but dark times; it helps sooth grief, loss, and other emotional turbulence. It is also a great tool for meditation and clairvoyance, & has been used in jewelry since ancient times for both its unique beauty and magic.

As a romantic stone: moonstone is thought to keep the passion alive between lovers when one gives it to another, especially during a full moon, while rings often symbolize unity and promises of 'forever' love.

The "swan's song" is an ancient belief that the muted swan, although glorious in its beauty, is unable to sing. It is only until it is on the precipice of death, when it sings the most beautiful song, & only once:

"The silver Swan, who living had no Note,
when Death approached, unlocked her silent throat.
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
thus sang her first and last, and sang no more:
"Farewell, all joys! O Death, come close mine eyes!
"More Geese than Swans now live, more Fools than Wise."

-Orlando Gibbons.

This ring stands 13mm off of the finger and is cast entirely in sterling silver at a small, independent casting company here in Philadelphia.

The feathers cradle a stunning 11mm round cut moonstone, with its pointed culet facing downwards, a kind of symbolic inversion of this ring's original incarnations.

Please note that moonstone is a natural stone, clarity and color will vary from stone to stone. Moonstone often has a milky appearance as well as natural inclusions within the stone. The flash will contain shades of blue, violet or teal, and occasionally a dark gold. If you have any concerns over the stone that will be randomly chosen for you ring, please contact me after purchase and I will be more than willing to assist you.

This version is hand oxidized and polished to achieve my rich shade of gloomy gray. If you are interested in a high polish finish or a rose gold plated finish, please contact me for pricing.
