Inspired by my love of the magic of the sea, Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid', Sylvia Plath, and Shakespeare's 'The Tempest,' 'Sea Witch' is a series composed of natural elements forged into new objects.

This necklace features life casts from a small seahorse, conjoined forever in sterling silver and enveloping a domed magnifying lens. Suspended from a sterling bar link chain & oxidized in my favorite shade of gloomy grey, highlighted to show all the perfect detail of the seahorses.

In 'The Tempest' Ariel serves the magician Prospero, conjuring the tempest, whispering songs in ears and perhaps more poignantly, causing lovers to fall in love. As a complex magical being, Ariel is seeking his release from his servitude to the magician, creating great havoc and yet also great love. Here i have imagined a talisman for him, a twinning of delicate sea creatures and spyglass to act as an instrument of seeing and revealing.

The pendant is just shy of being an inch and a half long and is just over one inch wide.

Magnifying lenses magnify the small things we are unable to see clearly when placed beneath the glass, acting as a large, powerful ‘eye’. While the glass is fully functional as an object/tool, as a talisman it urges its wearer to look closer, to see/feel the invisible: whether that be by examining our feelings and our Shadow with a deeper gaze or turning our sights to others; to mindfully ‘see’ our friends, lovers, family, and community: to foster a deeper sense of empathy, to spark the current of transformation.
