A tear shaped rainbow obsidian gemstone is set into a juvenile snake spine frame, creating a striking visual contrast between the smooth polished volcanic glass and the textured life cast vertebrae.
Combining the fiery, transformative energy of the Volcano with the similarly transformative energy of the chthonic Snake, this jewel is an amulet of renewal, as well as one of fierce protection. The specific use of the snake spine lends an element of bravery and courage in the face of uncertain and anxious times.
Rainbow Obsidian is found wherever volcanos are ( even here in the US), as it is formed during the rapid cooling of lava. The spectrum of colors occurs when the magma, which I consider to be the blood of the volcano, is rich with an inclusion of minerals that become trapped as the lava is hardening. The way the light interplays with these inclusions is how we perceive the bands of colors or rainbows, which is why the colors shift depending on how you hold them or how much light they are exposed to. A kind of captured magic that remind me of the rings of a tree, or the rings of Saturn. As above, so below.
What captivates me most about Obsidian is its storied use throughout time, especially in Mexico, where these cabochons are from. Due to it being a naturally formed glass, it was easily knapped into tools with incredibly sharp edges. While fragile, they were also highly effective and could produce the clean cuts. Aside from being used for practical tools, Obsidian was also utilized for divinatory purposes, due to its mirror like reflective surface, especially in its blackest form. It was so revered a material that it has been found as grave goods in the form of tools, jewelry, and "mirrors".
Please note that each piece of Rainbow Obsidian differs in color, as the polished igneous cabochons shine with bands of brilliant colors that vary from pink and purple to blue and green ( see photos for two examples of the differences in color ).
