Pulled from The Vault and slightly re-imagined, this ring is one of my earliest designs and was originally designed to be a mourning piece as hummingbirds have always felt like messengers from the dead to me, as I know they are to many others. 

A vintage setting serves as the foundation of this collaged ring: a nest like tangle of twisting vines / limbs/ veins cradle a black moonstone sunstone orb. Flanking either side of the ring as silent guardians of this precious moon ("egg") are two hummingbird skulls, carefully sculpted into the ring so their long, nectar culling beaks curve with the ring shaft. 

Being relegated to the Western hemisphere only, the hummingbird turns up in native and Aztec lore and myth. The Aztecs wore hummingbird fetishes as emblems of strength, and for the image of their sharp beaks, symbolic of bloodletting and piercing. The image was carved onto the shoulders of priests, and hummingbirds were also considered to be reincarnated warriors. This idea is often found in other cultures and thus the hummingbird appears as messages or messengers from the dead.

- Hand oxidized to achieve our favorite shade of stormy gray and then highlighted to reveal the bright luminous silver beneath

This jewel is hand cut and therefore may have small signs of the carver's hands. As this has not been fabricated by a machine, it has been made by hand and therefore isn't uniformly perfect. The photographs accurately portray the quality of the stone.
