This 'Halley's Comet' strand was inspired by one of my favorite Frida Kahlo paintings 'The Dream'. I have a small framed postcard of this by my bedside and have through several homes / moves, something about it helps me fall asleep....Despite this painting not being a 'night scene' I considered the idea of sleep being a kind of ‘Night’ despite the time when one sleeps or naps. 

Here Frida is picture deeply asleep with her paper mâché ‘Judas’ skeleton on top of her four poster bed, which is similar to the one she actually owned and spent a lot of time in, both awake ( working, socializing, recovering ) as well as sleeping / dreaming in. The liminal space of dreams is something I’m really interested in and the idea of a painting where one of my favorite artist is depicted sleeping / dreaming has endlessly fascinated me.

The Eagle Eye beads represent the colors and ‘stormy’ swirls of the background of this painting. Interestingly, when doing some research on this stone as I had never come across it before this past Denver trip - it’s a stone that protects you through ‘stormy’ seasons in life, a psychic guardian. Similar to Tiger’s Eye as its in the same ancient family, its also been called ‘gray cat’s eye’ and ‘eye of the wolf’. For me, any gemstone or jewelry that suggests eyes or the eye, is especially protective of all aspects of the body, both psychically and physically. 

Nocturne has had a few meanings over time; mostly based in art practices in the 18th and 19th centuries such as compositions for the piano ( most notably Debussy ) for evening entertainment or oil paintings evocative and of the night, that one can now find in museums, but were meant to be hung and admired in private homes after their ‘tours’. It is also rooted in the French - meaning ‘of the night’. 

With this small collection, my inspiration was to create my own ’night scenes’ or strands evocative of the night, that can be worn rather than listened to or admired on the wall, but are still reminiscent of that era of art making. Wearing the Night and being ‘of the night’ is always an abstract concept I’m exploring in my work; a quiet thread in the larger themes at play in each piece. 

This strand consists of smooth round 'Eagle Eye' beads as well as faceted onyx and glittering black spinel.

These beads range slightly in color but are primarily a cool toned medium grey. They have beautiful flashes of silvery white when turned.

As a natural stone, the color varies; each bead has been hand selected for its quality.

Onyx:

Onyx is best known for being a natural stone that act as a kind of 'psychic armor' against the negativity of others. It is also used to sooth grief and heartbreak. They are wonderful grounding stones and stones of self mastery, enabling its wearers to have mental and spiritual focus.

Spinel:

Spinel is a potent stone for healing and protection: working to help clear intense emotions such as anger and rage, it imbues its wearer with a sense of calm. It is also used to heal the physical body and has powerful metaphysical qualities, helping its wearer to feel strong, assisting with perseverance, especially when dealing with issues from the past that have become difficult to overcome. Much like Onyx, it also helps repel negativity from others.

This strand measures 51 inches long including clasp.

At its closure our medium sized, double sided eye talisman adds an additional layer of psychic protection. This eye can be positioned at the back of the neck or on the front of the body.
