An antique pendant, evoking the Maltese cross long associated with Firefighters, features at its center, the immaculate heart of Mary, belted with roses faded with time and set aflame with fierce love, a dagger is thrust through the side of the heart. Representing the pain of sorrow, I often wonder how much the sea of our hearts is given over the grief, especially these days. While I experienced the Catholic church as a child in small ways through a grandmother I saw only occasionally, the beauty and strangeness of its rituals and art have remained with me throughout the years, especially the worship and devotion to the sacred, disembodied hearts of its son and mother deities. This pendant has particular sentimental significance to me as my much beloved stepfather was a NYC firefighter for over 30 years. Wear as a talisman for fighting fires of all kinds, or as a balm for grief. As a dagger against the dark days.
