Spirit trumpets were used at the height of physical mediumship and during Seances when people would gather to communicate with the dead and hear messages from beyond the veil. These messages could be given in a variety of ways, through the medium's voice, "slate" writing, or through Spirit Trumpets that would hover in the air and amplify the whispered messages of the dead. My version of the spirit trumpet features an elongated trumpet with a shape similar to those used in the period and features a raised relief of a design I found on a grave bed tomb in Laurel Hill cemetery on the day of the recent Eclipse. Cemetery art has been a large inspiration to my work and I have had spirit trumpet sketches tucked in notebooks since I started my line; I'm thrilled to be able to make it come to fruition this year.

As a talisman, this piece asks us to "listen" closer to the quiet sounds around us, whether they are messages from the spirit & unseen worlds or the quiet voices inside us asking us to pay closer attention to ourselves { shadow selves } and those around us. Being mindful of ourselves and each other is so important these days.
