Inspired by the large beaded strands of Frida Kahlo that I was able to view in person when her exhibit 'Appearances Can Be Deceiving' was in Brooklyn in 2019, this more 'simple' yet striking strand features our beloved large, 'planet' moonstone spheres which have inclusions of golden threads, dark lines, as well as varying shades of beige and gray and are paired with small sterling silver beads. 

These 'planet' beads remind me of starlight, of traveling in outer space, the void beyond our planet. Designed with weight, size and feel in mind, these beads have a meditative quality, to ground the mind / body during times of anxiety. One of the tactics I employ is considering the celestial realms, how small I can feel amongst the 'heavens' and remembering the adage that we are  all made of stardust, that we are all connected by this truth ~ this smallness can be a comfort at times, the solitude of being a tiny speck amongst the stars, joined with everyone else who ever was, who we've ever known, and who will ever be. 

Moonstone:

Brown moonstone shares many of the same metaphysical properties as the rest of the moonstone family. It is closely tied to the moon, with some cultures believing the stone is solidified moon rays, while others think of them as embodiments of the moon's tears. Acting as a kind of Psychic armor, it is thought to protect its wearer from not only dark nights, but dark times; it helps sooth grief, loss, and other emotional turbulence. 

Moonstone is also known for its powerful psychic abilities. Used to protect empaths & sensitives from absorbing other people's emotions, it is known to be used during meditation for connecting to ones inner selves. As a romantic stone, it is known to strengthen the bonds between lovers when given as gifts, especially during the full moon. 

As a natural stone, clarity and color varies; each bead has been hand selected for its quality.

Please keep in mind that these beads are ‘earth made’ and then each one is hand cut and hand formed. You will see the earth’s inclusions inside and outside each sphere. Nothing is imperfect to me. I see evidence of a jeweler’s or a stone cutter’s hand and I think of Rodin, and how his sculptures included the evidence of his hands - from a hundred plus years ago - and how that connects me and my team, to this lineage of hand-making, in a time when machinated ‘perfect’ work is becoming more and more normalized. I am trying to resist this idea of ‘perfection’, and I implore the same of you. These are all hand made, and earth made beautiful objects, so inherently, by today’s standards, they are ‘imperfect’ - because humans had their hands, and more importantly, their hearts on them.

The photographs accurately portray the quality of the stones and the cuts. 

This strand measures approximately 24 inches long from end to end. At its closure is our is our largest, Eye clasp in sterling silver, oxidized to our favorite gloomy grey and finished to highlight the shining silver beneath. This clasp is tactile in nature making it easily held between the tips of your fingers and rubbed for comfort in times of grief, anxiety, dissociation, as well as during moments of joy and wonder.
