Happy Friday the 13th ! This year, 2026, we celebrate three of the “unlucky” day with a new design made in collaboration with my husband Aaron Horkey.
Though the number 13 has been considered unlucky for potentially thousands of years, Friday the 13th being an unlucky date has been a newer superstition. Some sources claim it to be due to Judas being the 13th guest at the Last Supper, while others say it is because on Friday the 13th in 1307, King Philip IV of France called for the arrests/deaths of at least 100 Knights Templar. In modern popular culture, the Friday the 13th horror have captured the imagination of many of us ( & some sleepless nights as kids who watched the earlier offerings too young ! ).
The number 13 has been considered both lucky and unlucky in different cultures; as someone who grew up with a very superstitious grandmother, I both did and didn’t take much notice of them. I would observe superstitions without realizing how ingrained in my belief system they truly were ~ watching out for black cats crossing my paths, properly disposing of broken mirror shards, refusing to open umbrellas in the home, because I didn’t want to risk my luck running out or bad luck attaching itself to me.
However, the number 13 and Friday the 13th became something I wanted to reclaim to be lucky rather than unlucky, and just as many folks get tattooed on this day, this necklace is an offering of the same ilk: an amulet of good luck for those brave enough to see its opposite.
This design of this pendant follows in the ancient tradition of "illuminated" letters which were the highly ornate and gold leafed capitalized letters within medieval manuscripts. This series ( see also our Illuminated Alphabet collection ) was created in homage to and in collaboration with my husband Aaron Horkey and his amazing hand lettering talents. It is based directly off a drawing Aaron has drawn by hand, in the way of the artists who hand drew and wrote out manuscripts: with dedication, precision and an eye for beauty.
It’s my hope that this number thirteen pendant will be a talisman of connection to the people, places, and dates you hold dear.
