Lately I’ve been feeling like my heart is on a pyre. That my heart is a book with a pen as a sword struck through it. My blood is ink - as Frida Kahlo painted her heart over and over - I write my heart into silver and hope you see yours reflected here too.
This pomegranate heart is for those of you who see yourself in the 8 of swords of the tarot these days, for those who are watching this world of horror ( and also this world of beauty ) and feeling small to it, feeling like your efforts of change aren’t big enough, feeling like the tethers of this timeline have bound you too tight to move ~ as if your sorrow keeps you still.
This is a talisman for those heartbroken and feeling trapped ~ a coin for safe passage to the other side of these feelings & this time in your life.
This coin is also for those of you who have a reverence or nostalgia for Catholic imagery while also feeling conflicted about some or all of the things the church stands for. ( I’m also not here to tell you what to believe in, or that what you believe in is wrong ). I did not grow up in the church but had a grandmother who went to church often and believed in what I thought at the time, as a young child, was ‘supernatural’ things. She explained visions she had, she prayed in what felt like a magic way. She loved the story of the roses of Guadalupe, the imagery of the 7 sorrows of Mary. The statues that wept. Maybe you had a grandma like this too. If so, this is for you.
Persephone, who ascends and descends, who seems to belong everywhere and nowhere - the liminal one. She who ate the seeds. She who freed people of the free of death when they pilgrimaged to see her in ancient Eleusis. A talisman for those who travel between worlds, who walk with spirit, who work with the dead. This is for you.
This coin is highly tactile and was designed to look like ancient currency. The back is smooth like a worry or river stone, allowing for a contrast of feeling when held in hand and rubbed between the fingers in moments of anxiety or daydreaming.

Back in 2017/2018 I started sketching & dreaming on ideas for an Oracle deck I wanted to make with my husband Aaron Horkey that was never to be as A). there are plenty in existence already B). it’s an extremely time & all consuming project if done the way he & I would have liked to have brought it into the world. Still, the ideas haunted me, the sketches & notes lived in my notebooks like embers which raged like wildfires in my sleep & cornering me at surprising moments in my waking hours. Considering this ~ I thought I could make these ideas into ‘divination coins’ instead ~ a deck of cards spread out over time to jewels ~ a narrative thread woven through silver talismanic vessels that could be worn and pressed against parts of the body, held, slept with, rather than made of paper and flipped over - fanned out in brief moments ~ something that resonated deeper than the original meaning I dreamed up for them.
~ I started to think of Ancient coins ~ of the many ‘values’ coins have had ~ grave goods, objects to collect over the ages- coins for the ferryman ~ objects that outlast us, ancestral objects ~ ancestral currency…..& I wanted to make my own that held a talismanic and personal value rather than monetary value that could then potentially hold a talismanic & personal narrative value to its new wearers….each of these three ‘coins’ are struck with extremely personal significance and I'm please to introduce the first three an ongoing series.
