Inspired by one of my oldest designs, twin wolf claws cradle a shallow moonstone 'Tomb' cabochon. The wolf claw used here is from the early years of Blood Milk, when I first began molding and casting natural materia. It has since be sent to many people, and in this way, I believe, the Wolf lives on, immortal in sterling silver.
Many ancient cultures revered the Wolf, looking to it as symbol of protection, loyalty, intuition, and courage. It was also an animal that was feared, as it often attacked both humans and livestock. This fearsome aspect lent potency to its apotropaic qualities, as people would either wear wolf teeth or claws, or hang them in their homes to cast away negativity or evil spirits. Fangs were also carried for good luck, and in some cultures, were used to help children teethe or pass through rites of initiation.
The pyramid shape of the stone suggests a tomb, a burial place where the ancient Egyptians laid their Pharaohs to rest. The shape of the pyramid symbolized the descending rays of the sun and suggested a sort of stairway for the buried dead to ascend into the heavens. Pyramids are also symbolically linked with the primordial mound from which the Egyptians believed the earth was created, having arisen from the lifeless waters of Chaos.
While the God Anubis was previously considered to be a jackal, new evidence has proved that it was most likely a wolf, a subspecies of the gray wolf. These wolves were revered in Egypt, many of which were themselves defied and mummified. Anubis, like many other deities, held many roles, but his best known was the psychopomp, guiding souls to the afterlife. He was present at the 'weighing of the heart' ritual, and would take those found worthy to the Underworld following this test.
In some ancient burial sites outside Egypt, wolf skulls and bones were found in graves, further linking the Wolf as an important animal in funerary customs and rites.
