Life-cast boa snake rib bones that I’ve used in BloodMilk since the beginning, form a frame around a stunningly reflective Rainbow Obsidian cabochon, giving it the appearance of a jeweled eye. While 'The Volcano’s Eye' is a limited edition collection, each offering is truly special as each piece of Rainbow Obsidian differs in color, as the polished igneous cabochons shine with bands of brilliant colors that vary from pink and purple to blue and green ( see photos for two examples ).

Obsidian is found wherever volcanos are ( even here in the US), as it occurs during the rapid cooling of lava. Rainbow obsidian occurs when the magma is rich with an inclusion of minerals that become trapped as the lava is hardening. The way the light interplays with these inclusions is how we perceive the rainbows, which is why the colors shift depending on how you hold them or how much light they catch. A kind of captured magic that remind me of the rings of a tree, or the rings of Saturn. As above, so below.

What captivates me most about Obsidian is its storied use throughout time, especially in Mexico, where these cabochons are from. Due to it being a natural glass, it was knapped easily into tools with incredibly sharp edges. While fragile, they were also highly effective and could produce the cleanest cuts. Aside from being used for practical tools, it was also utilized for divinatory purposes due to its reflective surfaces in its black form, and has been found in burials as grave goods as tools, jewelry, and mirrors amongst other treasured obsidian objects important enough to be buried with the dead.

Here, it has several uses: wear as an amulet used for apotropaic purposes, for protection to ward off the evil eye. Use it’s reflective surface and connection to the snake for divination. Attach your own meaning because you feel a calling to its beauty or to any snippet of the words above and over time, your own story will be imbued into its beautiful rings of color.
