Available for the first time online as a necklace, this offering is a slight re-imagining of one of my oldest jewels ( as well as the initial version of which the Moirai jewels have grown from ), The Witches ring, which was created in homage to the books that ignited my lifelong obsession with reading and the worlds of fantasy, speculative fiction and sci-fi.
The witches depicted in the books I read as a young child both fascinated and scared me, as they were written as both “grotesque” villains as well as beautiful enchantresses, likewise capable of destroying lives as well as granting the desires of those who seeked their favor.
As I look at this piece now and consider the deeper nuances of meaning that resonate with me 10+ years since its initial incarnation, I’ve been thinking of the symbolism of the number 3 as it relates to ancient writings & beliefs of mythology and religion. The triplicate / triple faced goddess of Greece, Hekate, patron goddess of witches, has roots in her role as guardian of liminal spaces and the crossroads; her ability to look and guard all directions. The triform depictions of her also suggest her as a representation of the three realms: the earthly, the celestial and the chthonic. As a talismanic vessel, this offering is imbued with the protective aspect of Hekate, her ability to grant safe travel in liminal spaces, both in all realms.
The small prongs holding the all silver ‘gemstone’ are cast from mouse bones, one of the smaller creatures I work with. The mouse as a symbol also has liminal aspects, as they are secretive, able to move nearly invisible through many spaces and “shadow” the movements of humans for survival. Likewise chthonic, they are like the snake, low to the ground with incredible senses, attentive and resilient despite their ‘feral’ and abhorred aspects. In myth and fairytale, the mouse often comes to the aid of those in distress, helping to carry out nearly impossible tasks for humans, or quietly befriending them with their scrappy company when they are locked in small rooms or towers, away from the world.
With the addition of the mouse, I was also thinking of the moments we feel small and helpless in the face of the strange times we live in or within the microcosmos of our personal lives; how feral and untamed we can also feel our hearts are. The mouse proves that despite being small, it is resilient in its ability to adapt and ‘gnaw” into other spaces if need be. These aspects make this jewel a companion for those moments, a touchstone for when you shrink inside of yourself, a physical reminder of the ways we can both retreat and advance in life. If you’re feeling this way, struggling with feelings of smallness and resilience, know you are not alone.
A triangular crystal was cast in sterling silver and retains all its lovely facets, acting as the gem of the piece, cradled by three tiny mouse bones, acting as prongs.
Cast in solid sterling silver, both pendant and chain are hand oxidized to achieve our favorite shade of stormy gray and then highlighted to reveal the bright luminous silver beneath.
