A most special piece as its specific design is a collaboration between myself and my husband, Aaron Horkey. When I knew I wanted to create a 'Night Time' hourglass jewel, I made several loose sketches that I shared with Aaron alongside the eternal inspiration of the Art Nouveau period as a point of reference ( which creates a kind of time travel inherent in its design alone due to its tether to this time period from the past.) Aaron immediately conjured several beautiful hourglass sketches based on my drawings and this inspiration which became the heart of this singular hourglass. Getting to share ideas and inspiration with my husband highlights how we can form meaningful connections with others over the course (time) of our lives.

The hourglass features a waning crescent moon & a cluster of stars at the bottom, symbolizing how time transforms for me at night - I find my thought patterns changing and unexpectedly feel memories surfacing like ancient relics at a dig site in that liminal space before sleep. Some of these memories and thoughts are pleasant but as I unwillingly time travel through the past before swimming into sleep, many of them are not….so I wanted to create a piece that helped soothe people’s night time ‘transformations’. Included in this idea is Nietzsche’s theory of ‘Eternal Return’ which focuses on the belief that being on earth is more important than thinking on the afterlife realms as we will continue to return and experience all we have in the past, in an endless loop. While this isn’t necessarily a comforting thought, { time is a flat circle } it also calls for us to reveal in the moments of joy, wonder and happiness when they happen as these moments are destined to forever repeat, much like the Phoenix who is born anew after setting itself on fire.

Lastly, and perhaps my main point of initial inspiration for this talisman is how I feel and have continually heard others feel that time has 'felt different' during the past few years as many of us felt major distributions in our immediate present due to the outbreak of the global pandemic as well as for many of our future plans. Time has never felt so strange or painfully disruptive to me while in deep isolation, something I felt I reckoned with often as almost a physical presence in my life. This is a talisman for those waiting/longing and for those who have felt the strangeness of time recently. 

Seen here in its smaller form, this listing is for one Hourglass pendant on our signature bar link chain in the length of your choosing. Both pendant and chain are sterling silver, hand oxidized to achieve our favorite shade of stormy gray and then highlighted to reveal the bright luminous silver beneath.
