In honor of the Halloween season, we’re offering two pumpkin “tokens” made in collaboration with Aaron Horkey and inspired by the Ancient Greek Muses Melpomene and Thalia, who were represented as the famous theatre masks Tragedy & Comedy. These masks were used in live, dramatic storytelling in ancient times to enable audiences to visually understand the emotions of the play actors no matter their distance from the stage. They have since become enduring symbols of the theater & its players. Likewise, mask wearing & carved, expressive pumpkins ( Jack O’ Lanterns ) have both been long time rituals of Halloween, which are old world traditions brought over from Europe, most notably Ireland. People would carve turnips and root vegetables with grotesque faces to ward off evil spirits. Samhain, a tradition that predates Christianity, is considered to be the genesis of Halloween, especially its aspect of being the night when the veil between the living and the dead is the thinnest.

These offerings are a bit more whimsical than our usual jewels ~ a treat for little me ( & perhaps little you ) who longed for Halloween all year and the tiny candies that would fill up my pumpkin pail.
