The planchette has become a personal symbol for me. After weathering a strange storm of personal losses, I became ( & still am) obsessed with discovering as much as I could about the afterlife through study of various cultural and religious beliefs.These examinations led me to dip further into my early interests in Victorian Spiritualist, which is founded on a belief in 'Spirit' and our ability to communicate with the dead.

These continuations of relationships after death fascinated me and the planchette became both a personal symbol of this obsession as well as a visual symbol for the imagined communication one could have employing the planchette. It has become, for me, a personal talisman for coping with grief and a symbol of the love that lingers on after death. 

Apart from the spirit board it is often associated with, the planchette was also used during Victorian times for automatic writing. A much larger version was rigged with wheels and a pencil and allowed for a free association writing that people employed to tap into their unconscious. In this way, the planchette is also a symbol of the divinatory experience between the conscious and the unconscious, between the body & the psyche.
