Seance: Lily Dale Spiritualism Bypass Cuff: Part II

$280.00

Two Victorian era hands  have been cast immortal in sterling silver to act as the guardians of your body when terminated at the ends of a beautiful bypass cuff. The hands act as the joining of the seance circle, adding your own body to this union.

The hand jewel was inspired by a Victorian letter clip holder and features elegant fingers, a detailed cuff, and my favorite part, a small, smooth snake curled around the wrist. Snake symbology was often used in Victorian imagery, beginning when Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with a snake ring. Here, it further symbolizes the 'unseen realm' that the medium taps into, the spirit world that they ferry messages to and from.

Part of my Lily Dale series, (the largest community of spiritualist mediums, which I visited in the summer of 2010) this piece marks my interest in Victorian Spiritualism, and how it has thrived in the shadows of modern society. Seances were made popular in the mid 1800's and consisted of a group of people who encircled a table, often holding hands, in the candle lit darkness to communicate with the 'other side' or the spirit world. These gatherings were popular during the Victorian era, and it's said even President Abraham Lincoln participated in them during his presidential term, in the White House.

This act of communicating with the Spirit World is also a metaphor for communicating with one's Self, the Unconscious, or the Shadow Self we only catch a glimpse of from time to time.

Each hand measures 1 1/2 inches long and are half an inch at their widest. The length of the cuff is approximately 6 inches, not including the hands. They are mostly hollow in the back for weight balance.
