A pair of faceted gray moonstones are set within the life cast jaw bones of a bat. 

Long associated with the Night, Bats are therefore also associated with dreams and the dream realm. Here, a jaw bone, symbolizing speech and language, is meant to assist with dream recall. Often when we wake, only a glimmer of out dreams may appear in our memory. Sitting with these threads and carefully unspooling them, like a long ribbon or a strange poem, can assist us in our magical endeavors and emotional processing. 

Rich with meaning and metaphor, the Bat has conflicting reputations. Here, in America, it is associated with fear, death and the scarier aspects of the night. It appears in Vampire lore and in other gothic horror tales as something to be feared, especially in the supernatural sense. Yet in China, it has been revered as a symbol of good luck and prosperity since antiquity, appearing on furniture, clothing and jewelry. 

When I think of the Bat, I think of its amazing ability to “see” in the dark via echolocation. Known to do so whilst in flight, they are able to navigate the night while avoiding both other bats and elements of their terrain such as trees. Their lack of sight in the traditional sense makes for a wonderfully nuanced metaphor for being able to see with our other senses, such as our intuition, in times of anxiety, grief and  other inky emotions. 

Akin to The Hanged Man tarot card, the Bat hangs upside down when resting / sleeping, curling its leathery wings over its body like a blanket. Just as The Hanged Man tarot card suggests seeing things from a different perspective, the Bat can assist us to do the same, observing things with our intuition or in ways we might not have thought of.

Gray Moonstone:

Gray moonstone shares many of the same metaphysical properties as the rest of the moonstone family. It is closely tied to the moon, with some cultures believing the stone is solidified moon rays, while others think of them as embodiments of the moon's tears. Acting as a kind of Psychic armor, it is thought to protect its wearer from not only dark nights, but dark times; it helps sooth grief, loss, and other emotional turbulence. Moonstone is also known for its powerful psychic abilities. This jewel is hand cut and therefore may have small signs of the carver's hands. As this has not been fabricated by a machine, it has been made by hand and therefore isn't uniformly perfect. The photographs accurately portray the quality and color of the stones.
