Ra, the Egyptian God of the Sun, was believed to die each night, journeying to the Underworld as the sun set. Each morning he would be reborn as the sun rose, destined to die again each night. This death and rebirth of the sun was mirrored in the natural habits of the owl, as the Egyptians observed its nocturnal nature. The owl was an important bird to the Egyptians, featuring heavily in their hieroglyphics, facing outward, gazing at the viewer while many other humans and animals were always rendered in profile. While the owl wasn’t representative of Ra, they believed it took a similar journey, dying in the morning and being reborn at night, its eyes inlaid with the sun since it could ‘see’ in the darkness.
This pendant features both the lunar nature of the owl as well as the solar “death” of the sun, represented by the rose cut onyx gemstone as well as the “rays” of the sun composed of life cast barred owl vertebrae.
